Philadelphia-based indie outfit Her New Knife has officially returned with their latest single, “lyre,” marking their first new music since the release of their 2024 EP, chrome is lullaby. The band, which previously garnered attention for their discordant, chilly take on guitar music and a standout remix on their EP, continues to evolve their sound with this latest offering. The track serves as a testament to their growth, arriving after a period of active collaboration, including a notable Björk cover and a contribution to the They Are Gutting A Body Of Water mixtape, KOOL FAITH / LOOSIES II.
“lyre” begins as a brooding, splintered post-punk composition, heavily influenced by the experimental spirit of Sonic Youth, before building toward a significantly heavier conclusion. While the band has often been associated with the shoegaze scene, this track resists such easy categorization. Frontman Edgar Atencio describes the song as “a simple and beautiful pop song,” a characterization that highlights the band’s unique perspective on their own creative output.
Started with an arrangement I did on classical guitar. During a moment where I felt generally disaffected by music, writing this song and playing more classical guitar invigorated me, and this song was a catalyst for the final push towards finishing our album. The drums are a love letter to UNKLE and Massive Attack. The glassy guitar parts are just Ben and I’s affinity for piano-like textures. There is also actual piano on the song. The song is not deep; the lyrics are essentially “I love music.”
With the release of “lyre,” Her New Knife is preparing to hit the road for a series of tour dates alongside Slow Pulp. Fans can catch the band live across North America throughout November, with a final appearance scheduled for the Treefort Music Fest in the spring of 2027.
