After a period of reflection and a brief hiatus from the music industry, singer-songwriter Johanna Warren has officially announced her new album, Frog In The Belly Of A Snake. The announcement follows a series of recent releases, including last month’s track “Islamorada,” marking a creative resurgence for the artist.
Warren, who previously suggested she was stepping away from music following a 2023 collection of live recordings, describes her return as a conscious effort to reclaim the joy of creation. “I’ve been on a bit of a mission these last few years to resuscitate within myself a spontaneous, uncomplicated way of making art for pleasure, like children do,” Warren explains. This renewed perspective is anchored by the lead single “Automatic,” which features a music video born from a serendipitous reconnection with her high school friend, Leora Fuller.
A Return to Spontaneity
The creative process behind Frog In The Belly Of A Snake was deeply rooted in live performance. Much of the album was tracked live to tape at Big Jelly Studios in the UK, with CJ Jones on drums and Tom Sansbury on bass. These sessions took place while Warren was finalizing her 2022 record, Lessons For Mutants, capturing a raw, immediate energy that defines the new project.
Reflecting on her earlier decision to step back, Warren is candid about the physical and mental toll that led to her hiatus. “My body was staging a protest,” she says. “A riot. And rightly so. It had been petitioning me for years to make some serious changes, and I let it get to a point where it stopped asking nicely and started throwing Molotov cocktails in the streets.”
