If you are of a certain age, the name “Candlebox” likely triggers a flood of memories. For the uninitiated, Candlebox was a Seattle rock band that rose to prominence during the grunge explosion of the early 1990s. Despite the inevitable backlash that followed their rapid ascent and quadruple-platinum debut, the band remains a touchstone for a specific era of rock ‘n’ roll confusion and excitement. Now, The Mountain Goats have immortalized that feeling with their latest single, “Candlebox.”
Next month, the prolific The Mountain Goats will release their new album, Days. Frontman John Darnielle originally envisioned the project as a spiritual successor to their 2017 record Goths, and while the thematic focus shifted, the album remains deeply rooted in the cultural echoes of the grunge era. With track titles like “Song For Layne Staley” and “Woodstock ’99,” the record promises a reflective look at the past.
“Candlebox” is not a literal tribute to the band itself, but rather a narrative piece written from the perspective of a hopeful, nameless group of musicians who land a life-changing opportunity to open for the band on tour. It captures a fleeting moment of infinite possibility before the realities of the music industry set in. The track swells with an infectious energy, showcasing John Darnielle’s signature storytelling prowess.
Our new single is called “Candlebox” and is about a nameless band in the ’90s who get offered an opening slot on the Candlebox tour. 1993, maybe, or 1994, and shortly after the whole experience they’re not a band anymore. Days is an album about how the past looks when you’re looking at it from way down the line, so I had to call in Matt Nathanson to sing harmonies; we were young men together when stories like this one were being passed around like lore. Recorded at the legendary Sear Sound in Manhattan during perfect weather. John Congleton produced and mixed. Jon Wurster on drums, Matt Douglas on guitar, Rob Jost played bass, I played keys and did the guitar solo. Set the dial for maximum ’90s because we pulled out all the stops: enjoy!
The reception from the real-life Kevin Martin, frontman of Candlebox, has been overwhelmingly positive. Martin noted that he found the track “amazing” and appreciated the band sharing it with him prior to its release. Days is set for release on August 7 via the band’s own Cadmean Dawn label.
