While it is standard practice for bands to build anticipation for a new release, Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian has made a bold claim regarding the band’s upcoming album, Cursum Perficio. According to Ian, the record features a track titled “The Edge of Perfection” that he considers the greatest song in the history of Anthrax.
“There’s a song called ‘Edge of Perfection,’ which I think is the greatest Anthrax song in the history of Anthrax,” Ian shared during a recent appearance on Full Metal Jackie’s weekend radio show. “We have not written anything this great in our career. And to do that all these years in makes it all the more special.”
A Journey Through ‘Cursum Perficio’
The album title, Cursum Perficio, which roughly translates to “My journey ends here,” reflects the band’s arduous path to completing the record. Ian explained that the creative process was significantly impacted by the global pause in 2020, which left the band members questioning the future of their career. It wasn’t until 2022 that the group was able to reconvene in Los Angeles to work on the material with renewed energy.
To ensure the highest quality, the band opted to split the recording process into two distinct sessions. This approach allowed the songs to “breathe” and provided the musicians with the necessary time to refine their arrangements without the pressure of a looming deadline. “It’s only made everything better in the end,” Ian noted. “Everything had so much more of a time to breathe and so much more time for us to work on it.”
Reflecting on Legacy and Inspiration
Beyond the technical aspects of the recording, Ian emphasized that the new material is deeply personal. He described “The Edge of Perfection” as a reflection on his family and his pursuit of happiness. “I think that I’ve never had any real other goal in my life except to be happy. And I am,” he said. The track serves as a testament to his current outlook on life, balancing the realities of imperfection with the drive to strive for excellence.
The album also features the single “It’s for the Kids,” which Ian characterizes as a “love letter to our fans.” The song serves as a high-energy, aggressive counterpoint to the more introspective tracks on the record, capturing the classic thrash sound that defined the band’s early years while addressing contemporary frustrations regarding the lack of empathy in society.
Looking Ahead
As Anthrax prepares for a busy touring schedule, including dates with Iron Maiden, Ian remains optimistic about the state of the metal scene. He believes that the genre is in a healthier place than it has been in decades, making it the perfect time for the release of Cursum Perficio on September 18. With a career spanning decades, Ian continues to find joy in the creative process, proving that even after all these years, the band is still capable of reaching new heights.
