The New England trio Perennial have an incredibly distinctive audio-visual aesthetic. All three members tend to wear striped T-shirts designed to evoke the 1960s mod era, a historical moment that also informs their party-starting punk rock. Their live show is contagiously fun, and their records kick ass.
Perennial built out their 2024 breakthrough album Art History into a proper era, including a companion EP and a deluxe edition. Now they’re ready to roll out “the new Perennial sound.” Guess what? It’s a lot like the old Perennial sound — which is to say it sounds like the 1960s collapsing into the early 2000s and starting a rock ‘n’ roll riot in the present.
In September, Perennial will release their new album Modernism. They once again recorded with producer Chris Teti and are once again releasing through Ernest Jenning Record Company. Lead single “What’s New On The Beat Scene” boasts the slicing guitar riffs, shout-along lyrics, and tambourine-shaking energy that has always made this band such a blast. Those organ stabs are a hoot, too.
