When our colleague Ryan Leas covered Pop Montréal a few years back, he introduced us to La Sécurité, describing them as a brooding, shadowy art-punk outfit with a distinct touch of Devo-esque playfulness. That francophone ensemble has returned today with Bingo!, their second full-length album, and it is an essential addition to your weekend rotation.
On Bingo!, the band leans into the atmospheric, shadowy qualities that defined their earlier work, manifesting in sharp flashes of no wave and shoegaze, anchored by the driving, violent rumble of Félix Bélisle’s bass lines. Yet, at its core, the record is an absolute blast.
Tracks like “Deny” serve as a nostalgic nod to the dance-punk era, reminiscent of the infectious energy of Le Tigre. Elsewhere, songs such as “Detour” evoke the art-damaged splendor of the late ’70s and early ’80s British post-punk scene. If you are a fan of groups like Telehealth or Vessel—bands that inject a healthy dose of B-52s-inspired energy into their post-punk party rock—you will find plenty to love here.
Bingo! is out now via Mothland/Bella Union.
