Jason Newsted Celebrates ‘Free and Clear’ Cancer Update, Reveals New ‘Clear-Headed’ Lifestyle

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has shared a significant update regarding his health, confirming that he is now “free and clear” following a battle with throat cancer. In a recent appearance on Dean Delray’s Let There Be Talk podcast, the musician opened up about the procedure he underwent in May 2025 and the profound lifestyle changes he has adopted in the aftermath.

Reflecting on the diagnosis, Newsted explained, “May 8th of 2025, I underwent a procedure for throat cancer. They took a bunch of stuff out, and then they went in with lasers. The cavern inside my head is different than it was, but we got it early. I got my ‘free and clear’ about three weeks ago. So, I beat it.”

Beyond the medical success, Newsted emphasized the mental and physical clarity he has gained by prioritizing rest and sobriety. He admitted that his previous lifestyle was defined by an “on or off” mentality, but the health scare served as a necessary wake-up call. “I promised myself I was going to rest, and that was the first time I’ve done that in my life,” he said. “I would’ve never stopped smoking weed, I would’ve never stopped drinking, I would’ve never stopped doing all the things. But the great spirit got my attention and said, ‘That’s not good right now, man.’ Now I’m more clear-headed than I’ve been in my entire adult life.”

Newsted is currently channeling his renewed energy into his musical projects, specifically Jason Newsted and the Chophouse Band. The group is set to embark on their first-ever U.S. headlining tour this summer, with dates spanning July. The tour will feature a mix of original material and covers, showcasing the band’s diverse sound, which ranges from bluegrass to heavy metal.

“I’ve realized that this is where I can place my energy effectively now,” Newsted remarked. “The Chophouse is the continuation of my ambassadorship of American music. We’re covering a lot of ground. There could be country flavor to a song, but it’ll still have sharp teeth. We are looking forward to an exciting summer!”

The tour will include several performances alongside the country-rock group Blackberry Smoke, culminating in a two-night stand at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. For fans of the legendary bassist, this return to the stage represents not just a musical comeback, but a celebration of his resilience and new, healthy chapter.
