During a high-energy performance at the Las Vegas Sphere on Saturday, Oct. 10, James Hetfield took a definitive stand regarding the role of artists in the current cultural climate. Addressing the audience, the frontman made it clear that Metallica has no interest in using their platform to push personal agendas, preferring instead to provide a space for fans to escape the pressures of the outside world.
A Commitment to Music Over Politics
Between songs, Hetfield expressed his gratitude to the fans who traveled to Las Vegas for the residency, acknowledging the significant time and financial investment required to attend. He then pivoted to a candid statement about the band’s philosophy, distancing themselves from performers who use their stage time to influence public opinion.
“I just gotta say, Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bullshit, okay? We are here… no bullshit… we’re here to forget about all the outside shit, okay? Metallica’s agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!”
This sentiment is consistent with the band’s long-standing policy. As far back as 2016, while promoting their album Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, Hetfield emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality. He noted that in an increasingly polarized society, the band chooses to avoid political and religious discourse to ensure their music remains a unifying force rather than a divisive one.
Expanding the Sphere Experience
Beyond the commentary, the Saturday night show marked a notable shift in the band’s setlist. For the first time during their residency, the group performed “Until It Sleeps” from their 1996 album Load. The performance utilized the venue’s cutting-edge visual technology to project the album’s iconic, albeit controversial, artwork throughout the arena.
The residency continues to evolve, with the band rotating tracks to keep the experience fresh for recurring attendees. Recent shows have seen the inclusion of classics like “Fade to Black” and “Orion,” further cementing the residency as a career-spanning celebration. Metallica is scheduled to continue their run at the Sphere through Nov. 7, with additional dates planned for 2027.
