Cincinnati-based artist Curt Kiser, known for his work under the moniker Carriers, has unveiled a heartfelt new cover of the 2003 Gillian Welch and David Rawlings classic, “Look At Miss Ohio.” The track, originally featured on the duo’s acclaimed Soul Journey album, serves as a timely reflection for Kiser, who was moved to record the song following the recent election results in Ohio.
Inspired by the victory of Amy Acton in the Ohio governor’s race, Kiser reportedly spent the early hours of the morning tracking the song as a tribute to the sense of hope he feels is currently permeating the state. “It’s been a big week for Ohio and even bigger for Amy Acton,” Kiser shared in a statement. “She’s been an inspiration since the first time I saw her on TV talking to us each day about the latest numbers of COVID cases. She had to deliver really hard information and she did it with such care, intention and gentleness.”
That night watching her announce that she was the new governor gave a lot of people a sense of hope for something, anything to change in a positive direction…not just in Ohio but in this country that has been living in a new nightmare everyday. I believe her when she said “the healing begins today.”
Kiser, who previously encountered Acton while working at a Cincinnati hotel, noted that his admiration for her extends beyond her political career, viewing her as a dedicated public servant who has overcome significant adversity. He expressed a belief that the melancholic yet powerful nature of the song resonates with the current collective mood of the country.
