Love is complicated.

Florida hardcore pop-punkers A Day to Remember have had the animated video for their single “Mindreader” done for a while. But with the world on seemingly endless lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now seemed as good a time as any to drop it.

“This song was one of my personal favorites off the new album from the day it was written,” said singer Jeremy McKinnon in a statement about the twisty noir cartoon, which was created for the track by Awesome, Inc. (Aqua Teen Hunger Force).

“I wrote it with the incredibly talented Mike Green. Fun fact, it was the first song I’ve ever sent the guys in the band that was unanimously loved. This song was written to be a lighthearted take on people in relationships expecting their partners to read their minds,” he added.

And indeed, the darkly-lit visual for the urgent rocker — released on Thursday (April 16) — tells the story of a searching young man looking for some answers to his love woes, only to be forced into a literal battle of the brains with his inscrutable love.

The song will appeare on the band’s upcoming album, You’re Welcome, from which they’ve already released the singles “Degenerates” and “Resentment.”
