It is a beautiful day for fans of The War On Drugs, as the band has officially returned with a brand new single. For those who have been eagerly awaiting new material, the arrival of The War On Drugs – “Who’s That” is a welcome cause for celebration, particularly given the band’s signature ability to layer sonic splendor into their compositions.
Released today, “Who’s That” marks the first new song from the group since 2022. The track is a gorgeous, midtempo piece that finds frontman Adam Granduciel once again backed by a lush, electro-organic soundscape, which notably includes piano contributions from Spoon’s Alex Fischel. Lyrically, Granduciel explores themes of self-reflection and the struggle for self-love, opening with the lines: “Would it be so wrong/ To be on the take? / I’ve been blowing all the ducks away/ Just another weekday.”
The production maintains the band’s established aesthetic—keyboard-forward and atmospheric—evoking an epic new wave sensibility while remaining firmly rooted in the dreamy, refined rock template that the band has spent over a decade perfecting.
“Who’s That” was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop off. It’s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can’t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.
