Black Sabbath Drummer Bill Ward Offers Transparency on Wheelchair Usage

Legendary Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has proactively shared photo footage of himself in a wheelchair with a full explanation, aiming to provide transparency and dispel any rumors regarding his health. As a public figure, Ward acknowledges that seeing a musician in a wheelchair often triggers immediate concern, and he is eager to assure his supporters that he remains active and in good spirits.

Understanding Bill Ward’s Health and Mobility

In a candid message posted to his Instagram account, the 78-year-old musician explained the necessity of his new mobility aid. “I’m announcing today somewhat sadly but nonetheless truthfully, that I’ve reached a place where publicly more and more I need to use a wheelchair, mostly in airports, or public events,” Ward stated. He emphasized that while he is still capable of walking, he requires the chair to manage fatigue during long-distance travel or extended public appearances.

Ward, who celebrated his 78th birthday on May 5, 2026, remains committed to his craft. “I can still walk, let there be no doubt, but I can’t walk very far without needing to rest,” he clarified. “We started using the wheelchair about 18 months ago. I’m still a drummer. I can still play pretty good for 78 years old.”

A Continued Commitment to Artistry

Despite the physical adjustments required by his age, Ward’s passion for music remains undiminished. He expressed that his ambition and drive to create art are as potent as they were decades ago. By sharing his situation, he hopes to prevent misconceptions about his retirement or health status.

“I’m just saying if you see me in a wheelchair, I’m just catching a ride, I’m not in retirement or ill or giving up, or any of those thoughts that ignite when we see people in wheelchairs. I’m making myself public and transparent about my new transport and letting you know I’m OK.”

Ward concluded his message with a warm invitation to his fans: “If you see me in the airports or visiting friends in the music arenas or theatres say hi, I don’t bite, I’ll just look different. Much love to you all and I’ll keep rocking until I’m dead.”

The drummer, who last performed with Black Sabbath at the ‘Back to the Beginning’ concert, continues to balance his legacy with ongoing creative projects, including his solo work and his time with the band Day of Errors.
