The Aubreys are Finn Wolfhard and Malcom Craig.

The Aubreys premiered their guitar-fueled new track “Loved One” on Tuesday (March 10), exclusively to Billboard.

The song finds Finn Wolfhard and bandmate Malcom Craig — both high school seniors and longtime pals — clamoring to make a special someone the loved one of the title. “Just tell me what is right/ ‘Cause I’ll follow you into the dark, into the night/ I got a question that I’m itching to ask/ One question that will restore my past/ I am a loved one/ I know you are too/ Just be my loved one/ I know you can be mine too,” the pair croon over syncopated drums and plenty of reverb.

“I travel a lot, so Malcolm and I usually send Aubreys music back and forth by iMessage. For ‘Loved One’ we actually recorded in Malcolm’s basement and did the vocals in a friend’s attic in Vancouver,” Wolfhard tells Billboard. “After we sent the tape to our buddy Andrew Humphrey in Chicago to mix, he added some keys and brought in our bubba Cadien Lake James from Twin Peaks for a gnarly solo near the end.”

“We feel close to the Chicago scene, ” the Stranger Things star adds, citing Twin Peaks, Ohhme, Djo, Grapetooth, Post-Animal, Andrew Humphrey’s Sun Cop. “We look to them for inspiration and advice all the time. As much as we love them, though, we can’t imagine doing what we do in anything other than a Vancouver state of mind. Like ‘Loved One,’ it embraces our family, friends, and all the music we play and listen to when we are lucky enough to be together at home.”

The track will be included on The Aubreys’ debut EP Soda & Pie, which is slated for release March 13 via AWAL. (“Loved One” drops two days before the EP release on March 11.) Look out for a few “secret shows” from the group this year, too.

Most recently, the band contributed “Getting Better (Otherwise)” to the soundtrack for The Turning, the 2020 supernatural horror film also starring Wolfhard.
