You might be surprised to find out that these are the best of times for Terror frontman Scott Vogel, especially when you consider their new album is titled Still Suffer. However, the singer shared with Full Metal Jackie that a significant lifestyle change is to credit for his current enthusiasm and creative clarity.
A New Perspective on Hardcore
Though the album carries the title Still Suffer, Vogel explains that the band’s latest hardcore gem was deeply inspired by his decision to significantly cut back on alcohol. “This record lyrically is pinned to the title, record, everything—lyrics are all pinpointed to one thing, which if you know me well enough, is recognizing that I’ve drank excessively for about 15 years and finally finding a way to get away from that,” the singer shared.
Later in the conversation, Vogel declared that his current life is as enjoyable as when the band was first starting out. “This period right now where I am not hungover, I have so much energy,” he says. “My focus now is cleaning the bandwagon, doing my laundry, getting haircuts, walking 20, 30, 40,000 steps a day. I do what I’m gonna call yoga, but it’s really just glorified stretching. It’s a totally different world for me, and right now, just being super present and what we’ll call healthy is this whole new world that is really enjoyable for me. I’m gonna say right now is my favorite period.”
Authenticity and Collaboration
Elsewhere in the chat, Jackie spoke with Vogel about the personal nature of the title track and how he feels about fans assigning their own meanings to his lyrics. He also discussed the experience of having New Found Glory‘s Chad Gilbert and Hot Water Music‘s Chuck Ragan contribute to the album. Vogel emphasized that the band continues to strive for the same level of authenticity that has defined their career for over two decades.
Vogel also addressed the rarity of a hardcore band reaching this level of longevity. “I don’t take any of it for granted. We are blessed to still have people that come out to our shows, listen to our music, connect with our music, and give us the energy at the live shows. So we are super, super blessed.”
Thanks to Scott Vogel of Terror for the interview. The band’s ‘Still Suffer’ album is available now.
