The Smashing Pumpkins kicked off their Rats in a Cage tour with a massive 32-song set in Columbus, Ohio, this past Wednesday night. The tour serves as a slightly belated 30th-anniversary celebration of the band’s iconic 1995 double-album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Billy Corgan, James Iha, and Jimmy Chamberlin dedicated the entire 16-song first set to material from that seminal record. The performance began with a somewhat restrained rendition of “1979” before the band shifted gears into high energy for “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” the track that inspired the tour’s title. Fans were treated to rare live performances, with “Cupid de Locke” and “Galapogos” appearing on the setlist for the first time since 2008, while “Fuck You (An Ode to No One),” “By Starlight,” and the title track “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” returned to the stage for the first time in over a decade.
A Career-Spanning Second Set
The second set offered a broader look at the band’s extensive catalog. Highlights included the live debuts of “Jesus is the Sun” from their 1991 debut Gish and “Sojourner” from the 2023 release ATUM: Act Three. The band continues their trek across North America, with the tour currently scheduled to conclude on Nov. 12 in Inglewood.
The Smashing Pumpkins will next perform on Friday night in Boston, with the Rats in a Cage tour currently scheduled to conclude on Nov. 12 in Inglewood.
