Following her solo debut last month with “The Way I Saw You,” Canadian indie musician Sari Lightman is continuing to build anticipation for her forthcoming album. The artist, known for her work with Tasseomancy and Lightman & Lightman, has unveiled a second preview of the project titled “Give It All Up.”
The track carries a deep, introspective weight, rooted in Lightman’s exploration of spiritual themes. Originally penned for the Lightman & Lightman record Sister Smile, the song serves as a conceptual dialogue between two historical figures: the singing nun Jeanine Deckers and the Jewish diarist Etty Hillesum. Lightman describes the composition as a “posthumous interview” where the lyrical structure functions as a back-and-forth exchange, with the leading lines posing questions and the subsequent lines offering ominous, prophetic responses.
“Give It All Up” is a posthumous interview between two contemporary female mystics, the singing nun, Jeanine Deckers and the Jewish diarist, Etty Hillesum. The song is conversational: The leading line asking the question, the second line responding. This is a supernatural interview and naturally, the responses are ominous and prophetic. Meg Duffy, my beloved friend/producer/guitarist of the track, suggested a stripped down version and it lent for a more meditative feeling. Also, I’ve always wanted to pull a Neil Young and pay homage to the self with a personal cover.
The production, helmed by Meg Duffy, leans into a minimalist aesthetic, stripping away excess to highlight the song’s meditative qualities. Lightman noted that the decision to simplify the arrangement was essential in capturing the song’s ethereal, supernatural narrative.
