Last month, Austin-based indie rock band proun announced their debut album Maybe Luck, introducing their sound with the compelling lead single “Miracles.” Today, the band returns with another arresting track that leans into a sweeping, emo-folk aesthetic, titled “Coloring Pages.”
“‘Coloring Pages’ is one of the most collaborative parts of the record,” says band leader Jamie Weed. Elaborating on the creative process, Weed explains:
This song stems from an instrumental demo [bassist] Dante [Zatto] sent me which outlined what became the drum, bass, and guitar parts. The instrumental felt like a departure from many of our other songs, embracing a more direct interaction between guitar and bass with more angular drums. I used this original demo as a canvas to write about coming out as trans to my mom and the feelings from that day. Parts feel like word vomit surrounded by memories of being a young child free from a gendered existence.
With its mumbly vocals, twinkly guitar riffs, and a cathartic solo, “Coloring Pages” captures the essence of modern emo. You can listen to the track below.
Maybe Luck is scheduled for release on June 26 via Good English.
