Mae Muller headlined the most recent edition of Club NME with Ladbrokes LIVE this weekend at London’s Scala (April 12).
In what was her first headline show of the year, Muller debuted tracks from her 2023 album ‘Sorry I’m Late’ for the first time returning to the stage in style. Performing to a hometown crowd who knew every lyric, the set spanned from fan favourite ‘Work Like That’ through to her enormous single ‘I Wrote A Song’, which was the UK’s Eurovision entry for 2023.
The crowd were also treated to DJ sets from pop royalty Self Esteem and drag icon Raven Mandella, the latter of whom kicked things off with a colourful, energetic set. Self Esteem continued the party atmosphere immediately after Muller’s set, as the Mercury Prize-nominated artist spun her favourite club classics into the early hours.
Tickets were once again free to punters, marking the third instalment in the relaunch of Club NME. In partnership with Ladbrokes LIVE, Club NME has hosted the likes of Blossoms and Courteeners in the past year, bringing the legendary indie disco back with a bang. This weekend’s set from Muller was no different, rewarding fans who had been queuing round the block with their dream Friday night.
Speaking to NME ahead of the set, Muller described her excitement to unveil tracks from her debut album for the first time, including ‘Something Real.’ She also told us about her love of Harry Styles, Charli XCX and Dolly Parton, naming the latter as her dream collaboration: “she’s the best songwriter in the world.”
Confident and charismatic from the moment she took to the stage, Muller’s set produced many highlights, including opening number ‘I Just Came To Dance’ and a surprise cover of ABBA’s 1975 anthem ‘S.O.S.’, before handing over to Self Esteem to close out proceedings.
