With the release of her highly anticipated new album just days away, the gauzy, expansive singer and composer Julia Holter is building momentum. On Friday, Holter will unveil her latest LP, Materia, a project that has already been teased with tracks such as “The Laugh Is In The Eyes,” “Fantasy,” and “My Lost One.” To tide listeners over until the full-length arrives, Holter has shared one more track today: the cinematic “Materia 2.”
The title of the new album is a direct nod to a song from her previous 2024 release, Something In The Room She Moves. Interestingly, the song “Materia” itself does not appear on the new album, though the tracklist does feature both “Materia 2” and “Materia 3,” suggesting they are all part of a cohesive, interconnected cinematic universe. “Materia 2” serves as a hazy, immersive fog, blending Holter’s signature vocal style with that of fellow singer and composer Jessika Kenney. The track is further enriched by the fretless bass work of Devra Hoff and the clarinet contributions of Chris Speed.
Materia is scheduled for release on August 21 via Domino.
