A couple of months ago, Compton club funkateer Channel Tres flipped the Crystal Waters classic “100% Pure Love” on his single “Medicine.” Today, he’s back with another new track. As far as I know, this one doesn’t interpolate any early-’90s bangers, though it does have some of that feeling. It’s a heady house track with a ridiculous level of strut in the bass, and Tres sounds great over that groove.
Channel Tres co-wrote and co-produced “Pop Pop” with his regular collaborator Nick Sylvester. It doesn’t really have anything to do with this Channel Tres single, but it is worth noting that Sylvester’s wife, Mina Kimes, recently won the Celebrity Jeopardy! All-Stars final. Watching the finals from a hotel room, it was hard not to get swept up in the excitement of seeing a friend achieve such a massive victory. It feels really good to see that kind of success.
