Since joining the legendary ranks of Rush earlier this summer, drummer Anika Nilles has quickly established herself as a formidable force behind the kit. Stepping into the role previously held by the late, iconic Neil Peart, Nilles has earned widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike for her technical precision and vibrant stage presence. As the band continues their “Fifty Something” reunion tour, Nilles is already looking toward the future, specifically regarding the group’s setlist.
A Deep Cut Wish List
In a recent interview, Nilles expressed a desire to incorporate a specific track into the band’s live repertoire: “Kid Gloves,” a standout cut from the 1984 album Grace Under Pressure. The track, which has not been performed live since the original tour supporting that record, holds a special place in Nilles’ musical sensibilities.
“I told Geddy, if I can ever have a wish list song, can we do that one? And he was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting,'” Nilles shared. “I play it a little bit in the dressing room just for fun. I love the grooves, the buildup and everything. I love the harmonies and the vibe.”
Preparing for the Sphere Residency
The conversation surrounding setlist expansion comes at a pivotal time for the band. Following the success of their current tour, Rush is set to headline a highly anticipated residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, beginning May 21. For Geddy Lee, the venue represents a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of the band’s visual and sonic presentation.
“When I first heard of Sphere, I thought to myself, ‘Wow, what a shame that Rush is no longer touring, because this venue sounds tailor made for the kind of visual attitude with which we have always designed our shows,'” Lee noted in a press release. “Now, here we are, living and touring in the present tense and we are able to make that particular dream come true.”
As Nilles prepares for the residency, her enthusiasm for the project is palpable. Having only visited Las Vegas once before, she is eager to experience the city’s unique energy while contributing to what promises to be a landmark series of performances for the band.
