Power Trip Returns: First New Music Since Riley Gale’s Passing

In 2020, the music world lost Riley Gale, the charismatic and influential frontman of the Texan hardcore/thrash powerhouse Power Trip, who died suddenly at the age of 34. The loss left fans, friends, and bandmates in a state of profound grief. However, the band has now begun a new chapter, officially releasing their first new music since the tragedy. This return marks a significant milestone for the group as they continue their legacy with a new vocalist.

Following a period of transition that saw guitarist Blake Ibanez launch the band Fugitive, the path forward for Power Trip became clearer. After resolving legal disputes with Gale’s family, Seth Gilmore—frontman of Fugitive and Skourge—was officially named the new singer of Power Trip. Having already proven his chemistry with the band during a surprise 2023 reunion set in Austin, Gilmore now steps into the role permanently as the band prepares for their third studio album, their first since 2017’s monumental Nightmare Logic.

A New Chapter for Power Trip

The task of following up a record as revered as Nightmare Logic, particularly under such difficult circumstances, is immense. Yet, with the release of their new tracks “Precinct 3” and “Scavenger,” Power Trip has demonstrated that they are capable of capturing their signature intensity. Recorded with acclaimed metal producer Jacob Hansen, these tracks are fast, frenetic, and packed with the heavy, riff-driven sound that defined the band’s earlier work.

Regarding the creative process, Blake Ibanez noted in a press release:

When we were writing this, we wondered what Riley would have wanted to write about. So once we decided on that approach, it honestly came really easily — the lyrics were flowing, and it just felt like the right way to kick off this new chapter and honor him. I think he would have been stoked to see it come to fruition.

Drummer Chris Ulsh added insight into the production, stating:

Recording worked out really well for us because [Jacob Hansen] has the knowledge of making these big records, but also comes from the late ’80s extreme metal underground. We’re tough to please because we want something that sounds current, but most importantly we want it to sound like us, however that comes out.

Looking Ahead

The new material, which includes an Eric Richter-directed video for “Precinct 3,” serves as a testament to the band’s resilience. The tracks are currently available via Blue Grape Music and will see a physical release on a limited 7″ vinyl, including a special Record Store Day Black Friday edition. As Power Trip continues to tour and prepare for their upcoming full-length album, they remain committed to honoring their past while forging a path forward.
