Bluegrass superstar Billy Strings remains remarkably prolific, even while navigating recovery from a broken leg sustained during a skateboarding accident this past April. Despite the injury, the artist is moving forward with a packed schedule of summer and fall performances, including his own hometown music festival, the Ionia Freak Fair. The event, scheduled for August 28-29 in Ionia, Michigan, will now serve as the backdrop for the release of his highly anticipated new studio album, So Much For Goodbyes.
Serving as the follow-up to his 2024 effort Highway Prayers, the new record is slated for release on the final Friday of August. While his previous project featured production from Jon Brion, this latest collection sees Strings collaborating with the legendary T Bone Burnett. The album’s cover art holds deep personal significance, featuring work by Strings’ late mother, Debra Apostol, to whom the project is dedicated.
I made this record to honor my mother. To notice and embrace this very significant period of grief in my life and make art from it. To turn my heartbreak into songs while using my guitar as a coping mechanism as I always have. It’s always been there for me to lean on through the hard times, and I figure it always will…until it’s my time to say goodbye.
In conjunction with the announcement, Strings has unveiled the lead single, “Burn The Other End,” a track co-written with Paul Hoffman. The song is a moody, minor-key exploration that effectively bridges the gap between traditional bluegrass sensibilities and the intensity of metal. Fans can watch the official music video below.
So Much For Goodbyes is set for release on August 28 via Reprise Records.
