Just weeks before Weezer is set to release their highly anticipated new album, Van Weezer, the band has a treat to hold fans over in the form of a brand new song.
Their latest, “Hero,” arrived along with a music video on Wednesday (May 6).
“When I was a kid I thought I’d save the world/ Running ’round and chasing all the criminals/ Swinging on a web, flying in the sky/ Shooting lasers from my eyes/ But now I know it never was my destiny/ It’s not my place in life, not who I’m meant to be/ And I don’t want the glory, I don’t want the fame/ And I don’t wanna wear this cape,” frontman Rivers Cuomo sings on the upbeat track over rocking guitar and production.
The new song also has a charitable tie-in, as a release states: “In honor of the real heroes, the band has teamed up with Postmates to support healthcare heroes caring for COVID-19 patients. Tonight, hero nurses at LA’s Good Samaritan Hospital will be sent meals from Uncle Paulie’s Deli during their breaks thanks to Weezer, Postmates and Feed Hero Nurses, a volunteer-run organization in partnership with Random Acts that is dedicated to providing meals to nurses on the frontlines.”
“Hero” follows Weezer’s previously-released single “The End of the Game.”
“Last album we didn’t have any guitars, this one is just all guitars. A hundred guitars,” frontman Rivers Cuomo told Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1 of Van Weezer.
