SZA spoke out on Monday (June 1) to support the cancellation of a planned sit-in protest in Los Angeles in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
“JUST FOUND OUT TOMORROW[‘]S CANCELLED!” she wrote on Instagram. “AFTER PROPER DUE [DILIGENCE] THERE ARE MANY RISK FACTORS I CAN NOT ALIGN WITH . MOST IMPORTANTLY A NEW 4pm CURFEW . THIS WOULD MAKE TOMORROW ESSENTIALLY A SET UP. I DO NOT CONDONE ENDANGERING MY PPL. Bless.”
Originally organized by photographer Luke Austin and choreographer Brandon Mathis, the sit-in was intended to take place on Sunset Boulevard near Laurel Canyon on Monday afternoon.
“As a major intersection in LA, the purpose of blocking its pathway is to immediately congest the flow of the city and to upset the way of living for those privileged enough to live in the Laurel and Sunset Blvd. canyons. This standstill will symbolize the immediate feelings of African Americans not being able to go about our lives on a day to day basis without there being an obstacle of some sort,” the duo said in a social media post announcing the now-cancelled event, which was shuttered due to reported threats of violence and the LAPD’s new 4 p.m. curfew.
Earlier last week, SZA also shared a memorial to George Floyd her social media feed, in which the signer committed to stopping “every time I see a black person pulled over.”
“I will DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO PROTECT BLACK LIFE,” she continued. “I will NEVER get used to seeing murder and constant Black Death on my timeline.”
