Rihanna has hit back at a troll online who called her “forehead” and insisted she release new music.

The exchange of comments came as the singer shared a new video on social media to usher in the new year. In the clip, Rihanna is seen having a tame party with her friends, wearing a grey bathrobe. She rang in 2025 by confirming that she had been sober for the entirety of 2024.

However, while many fans in the comment section celebrated with her, one started the new year on a less positive note, writing: “We want an album forehead”.

Surprisingly, the comment didn’t go unnoticed by the ‘Umbrella’ singer, who soon took to the reply section to put them back in line. “Listen Lorenzo!” she wrote, “You ain’t cute enough to be calling me by my black name you dizzy fuck!”

The aforementioned fan confronted by Rihanna was far from the only person who took to the comment section to plead for new music from the singer. Elsewhere, one comment read: “Does this version drop music?”, while another person wrote: “New year new me? SO THAT’S NEW MUSIC RIGHT?”.

The eagerness for new material comes as 2024 marked another quiet year from Rihanna on the music-front, as she has yet to release the long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s ‘Anti’.

Speculation about a new LP first got momentum in 2018, when Ri began hinting at new material and promised fans in an Instagram comment that it would arrive in 2019. That year, she also captioned a video of a dog dancing to House Of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ with the message “Me listening to R9 by myself and refusing to release it.”

In 2020, however, she put a dampener on the hopes for the album when she told fans to stop asking her to release new material during the pandemic.

The upcoming project has yet to be given a title and continues to be dubbed ‘R9’ by fans. In October 2023, Entertainment Tonight shared an update and reported that Rihanna was planning her musical return, signed a deal with Live Nation and was looking to go on a world tour from 2024-2025. Similarly, in December that year, Rihanna took these rumours one step further, teasing on the red carpet that there may be new music and a world tour on the horizon.

The rumours extended into 2024 too, and the singer’s partner A$AP Rocky confirmed in February 2024 that Rihanna was still “working on” her highly-anticipated album.

More recently, however, Rihanna addressed her future in music while attending a Fenty launch party in her Barbados hometown in November. She said: “Music was the thing that got the attention, but God had other plans for me. And I was able to create in ways that were very sincere and genuine, or organic and authentic to the things that I love.”

Rihanna’s last release was the 2022 song ‘Lift Me Up’, the sombre lead single to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack and a tribute to late actor Chadwick Boseman.
