Operation Ivy’s Tim Armstrong & Jesse Michaels Join The Family Business LTD

The enduring legacy of Berkeley ska-punk pioneers Operation Ivy continues to evolve in unexpected ways. While fans have long clamored for a full-scale reunion of the band that defined a scrappy, high-energy sound between 1987 and 1989, recent years have seen the group’s core members, Tim Armstrong and Jesse Michaels, finding new avenues for collaboration. Following their brief 2023 project Bad Optix, the duo has now emerged as key creative contributors to the debut album from a new ska collective, The Family Business LTD.

A New Chapter for Ska-Punk Icons

The Family Business LTD is a project spearheaded by British musician Jordan Cardy, known as Rat Boy, alongside Samuel Preston of The Ordinary Boys and toaster Antonee First Class. The group aims to revitalize the two-tone ska sound that dominated the UK music scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The project took shape in 2023 during studio sessions with Armstrong, who serves as a mentor to Cardy through his Hellcat imprint.

According to the band, the creative process was remarkably efficient. “Everything clicked straight away in the studio, and the songs came together so naturally,” Rat Boy noted in a press release. “Tim suggested bringing in Antonee, and before we knew it, the album was written and recorded in two weeks.” The recording sessions also featured backing from The Calamatix, with both Armstrong and Michaels providing additional creative input.

The Sound of The Family Business LTD

The project’s lead single, “Floor Burner,” showcases the high-octane energy expected from a collaboration involving Armstrong. While Michaels does not feature on this specific track, Armstrong’s influence is unmistakable, as he produced the song and contributed guitar and vocals. The track serves as a fast-paced, modern homage to the ska-punk roots that both Armstrong and Michaels helped establish decades ago.

The self-titled debut album is slated for release on September 25 via Hellcat. As fans await this new collection, the question remains whether the pair will eventually revisit their own projects like Bad Optix or the short-lived Doom Regulator. For now, the involvement of two of the most influential figures in the genre ensures that The Family Business LTD will be a focal point for ska enthusiasts this fall.
