Lizzo made an appearance at Vice President Kamala Harris‘ rally and hit out at Donald Trump‘s recent comments about Detroit.

The early vote event in Detroit saw both come out in praise of the city, a stark contrast to the Republican nominee’s thoughts.

On October 10, Trump made a speech before the Detroit Economic Club, during which he called Michigan a “once great city”, and said their “car industry is going out of business.” His comments quickly drew the ire of Jack White, who called him a “wanna-be dictator orange clown”.

At one point, Trump used Detriot as an example of what would happen to the country if his opponent, Harris, went on to win the election. “It will be like Detroit,” he said. “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands.”

Yesterday, the ‘About Damn Time’ singer nodded to these comments and told the crowd: “All the best things were made in Detroit: Coney dogs, Faygo, and Lizzo.”

“I’m so proud to be from this city,” she said. “You know, they say if Kamala wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit. OK. Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit. We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry. So put some respect on Detroit’s name.”

During Lizzo’s speech on Saturday (October 19), she shared that she had already voted early for Harris and encouraged others to do the same.

“They say voting is not a love letter, it’s a chess move,” she continued. “Well, I feel like voting early is not just a chess move, it’s a power move. There’s a lot of people who feel like their vote doesn’t matter, but I say to that: If your vote didn’t matter, then voter suppression would not exist.

“If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t discourage young people from going to the polls. If your vote didn’t matter, our parents and our grandparents would not have marched and fought for our right to vote.”

She concluded by telling attendees Michigan was “the swing state of all swing states”, and that “every single last vote here counts”.
