Lil Dicky stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night (March 4) to promote his new FX comedy, Dave, and chat about launching his comedy-rap career with the help of his self-made viral music videos.
“So my parents wouldn’t let me touch my bar mitzvah money until adulthood, which in retrospect was a great call on their end,” the comedian, born Dave Burd, told host Jimmy Kimmel. “So I had X amount of … you know, $6,000 saved in my bank account from my bar mitzvah and I decided to spend it on music videos. And it was a great career decision.”
Despite his parents’ reluctance, Lil Dicky dished that the idea ultimately paid off — even if it took a while to win his mom and dad over. “Yeah, I think it was a little jarring for them,” he admitted. “But I said, ‘What am I gonna do? Buy a couch when I’m 28 years old?’ Why wouldn’t I pursue my dreams?”
After two years of non-stop work, the rapper’s first video — 2013’s “Ex-Boyfriend” — went immediately viral with more than one million views in just 24 hours.
