Compton, California – Kendrick Lamar has been low-key on social media since the George Floyd protests and in turn, protests against police brutality have taken place across the globe. On Sunday (June 7), he subtly made his return to where he was needed most: his hometown of Compton.
The To Pimp A Butterfly star joined fellow Angelinos DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook in a protest in Compton. Dubbed a Compton Peace Walk, Lamar blended in with the crowd and made sure that his appearance didn’t take away from the moment.
The march took place from Gateway Towne Center in Los Angeles to Compton City Hall.
“Protect your team, protect your family. In times like this, we need to stick together,” Westbrook said before asking the crowd to put a fist up for a moment of silence.

Lamar’s appearance at his hometown protest joins a list of several Hip Hop stars who have taken to the streets to let their voices be heard. Rick Ross joined protesters in Miramar, Florida, on Saturday (June 6) to give people “an example on how to move.” J. Cole was joined by Dennis Smith Jr. in their hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, for a protest to raise awareness for Floyd.
Floyd, who was born in Raeford, North Carolina, was killed on May 25 in police custody. His death, captured on video, was the latest in a series of killings of unarmed black men and women and sparked a global call to action in regards to racism and support of Black Lives Matter.
