The Garden State’s biggest superstars came together (virtually) on Wednesday night (April 22) at the The Jersey 4 Jersey benefit for the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, supporting heroic efforts of those on the frontlines amid the coronavirus crisis.
A particularly emotional moment of the night was when the remaining members of Fountains of Wayne reunited for their first live performance in seven years to pay tribute to their late band member Adam Schlesinger, who passed away earlier this month due to complications from COVID-19.
Chris Collingwood, Jody Porter and Brian Young were joined by Sharon Van Etten to fill in on bass and backing vocals, and the group performed “Hackensack,” a tribute to Jersey.
“This for Adam, his parents, his children and New Jersey,” Collingwood said. The “Hackensack” performance hit more poignantly in the wake of Schlesinger’s death, with lyrics that assure, “Sometimes I wonder where you are / Probably in LA / That seems to be where everybody else ends up these days / But I will wait for you / As long as I need to / And if you ever get back to Hackensack / I’ll be here for you.”
