D Smoke performed a quick medley of his songs at the BET Awards 2020 on Sunday (June 28). During the network’s first virtual ceremony due to the global coronavirus pandemic, the inaugural winner of Netflix’s Rhythm & Flow was joined by his brother SiR on a makeshift stage that resembled the streets of L.A.
As the performance began, a Black man danced in front of a burned out car, as police dressed in riot gear joined him. D Smoke then broke into his emotional new song “Let Go,” which was written the day George Floyd died at the hands of Minneapolis police.
“I reach out despite the feeling they out to kill us/ Get rowdy ’bout the Pesos/ The solution for this whole institution/ Just to breathe, we need to let go,” sings Sir.
After the chorus, D Smoke smoothly transitioned into “Black Habits,” and was joined by Jackie Gouche for the chorus: “Black magic (black magic), black excellence (black excellence)/ Black habits (black habits), this black medicine (yeah), everything/ Black Chucks, black tux, everything, everything.”
In addition to D Smoke and SiR, performers include John Legend, Megan Thee Stallion, Alicia Keys, and more.
