The 2025 Grammy Awards took place last Sunday (Feb. 2), and among the most surprising and amusing moments was when Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante was mistaken for Poppy while giving a red carpet interview. During a recent Instagram Live session, LaPlante shared some thoughts on being confused for her fellow singer and Best Metal Performance nominee.
For context: While on the red carpet, a reporter from Stage Right Secrets called out to LaPlante but erroneously addressed her as Poppy. LaPlante handled it like a pro, of course, remarking: “I am Poppy and I am really happy to be here nominated with Knocked Loose. I really hope we win.” She continued playing into the gag with more Poppy details, and ultimately, Gojira won the award for “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira).”
Per Metal Injection, LaPlante’s recent Instagram Live session found her reflecting on the hilarious oversight:
I was like, “Don’t say anything too crazy” because I don’t know Poppy and Knocked Loose well enough to go crazy on it, you know? What if they don’t like this? What if they feel like I’m mocking their achievements, because I wasn’t – I think this is very funny.
It reminded me of [when] Charlie XCX was doing an interview, and someone was like, “What was it like writing [the Lorde song] ‘Royals’ or something like that?” And instead of being all shitty about it, she just talked about writing “Royals” and being a teenager from New Zealand. I took that as my inspiration, and I think everyone left happy, right? We got promotion of Poppy and Knocked Loose in there, [and] I slipped a little Spiritbox and Courtney in there too.

A couple days after the Grammy Awards, Poppy subsequently added to the viral fun by releasing a black t-shirt featuring a name tag that says, “Hello. I am Poppy.” The same day (Feb. 4), Spotify ingeniously got in on the joke by showcasing LaPlante as the featured image on that week’s Kickass Metal playlist but with the following description: “Poppy on top of today’s best Metal playlist.”
Both Spiritbox and Poppy actually appeared on the playlist, though, so it mostly still made sense.
If there’s on takeaway from all of this, it’s that in the end, we’re all Poppy, right?
