Following the success of their 2024 breakout album Water’s Here In You, the upstate New York duo Babehoven—comprised of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert—is set to return with a brand-new project. Titled I See Them, I See Me, the album is scheduled for a September release via Double Double Whammy. To mark the announcement, the band has shared the lead single, “Lasagna,” accompanied by a music video directed by Ash Kron.
“Lasagna” serves as a quintessential example of the band’s contemporary soft rock aesthetic. The track is built upon a foundation of pedal steel, warm acoustic guitar strums, and Maya Bon’s signature cotton-soft vocal delivery. Lyrically, the song navigates the complexities of personal growth and the emotional labor required to sustain intimacy. Bon reflects on the struggle of maintaining one’s sense of self while deeply intertwined with another, capturing a feeling of being “small, stuck, and frantic all at once.”
A Collaborative Evolution
For the recording of I See Them, I See Me, the duo expanded their creative process by working with three distinct engineers: Sam Evian, Kevin Copeland, and Phil Weinrobe, the latter of whom also served as a co-producer. The band noted that their primary objective was to capture a “fresh, live, honest feel” in the studio, emphasizing a desire to prioritize enjoyment throughout the production process.
The recording sessions were notably unconventional, featuring a six-person ensemble and a strict “no playback, no headphones, and no preparation” mandate enforced by Weinrobe. This experimental approach was designed to push the band toward more spontaneous and authentic performances.
I See Them, I See Me is slated for release on September 18. The tracklist is as follows:
- 01 “You’re A Liar”
- 02 “When You Look At Me”
